Ruka Webcams
These web cameras are located on the Masto hillside, less than a hundred metres from the popular Ruka downhill ski slopes
in Kuusamo, northern Finland. They are updated every few hours during the day between 07:00 and midnight local time
(Finland is +2 hours GMT/BST). The current time is 16:47, 20 May 2012.
Clicking on a camera image will load a larger version. Cam 1 is looking south east away from the ski slopes and Cam 2
is looking north west towards the slopes.
Rukatunturi is a 490 metre high fell (Google Map)
about 50km south of the Arctic Circle in Lapland.
It is a popular tourist centre with 29 ski slopes and 20 ski-lifts. There are also over 500km of cross country ski tracks and
600km of dedicated skidoo routes in the area. You can generally expect a decent snow cover from early December to May, and it can accumulate
up to 100cm deep towards the end of the season. In the summer there are plenty of hiking routes and national parks to explore. For more information please
see the official Ruka web site and Ruka & Kuusamo - A Travel Guide.
The Geeky Stuff
The webcams are 480 TVL analogue PAL colour cameras supplied by RF Concepts
which in turn are plugged into an Aviosys IP Video 9100A video server from DigiDave.
The video server allows us to broadcast the cameras on the Internet without a PC. The Ruka server is connected to the Internet via
an ADSL line.
A remote web server in London then collects daily images and stores them for presentation on this web site.
